Writing:  Poetry, Plays and Prose

Ever since I was a child I have written stories - fantasy adventures with heroes and monsters.  It was a lot of fun, but when I began to read the lives of the saints I began to see that reality was more marvelous than any fiction and that daily life trying to be virtuous was just like fighting dragons:  the dragons of our selfishness, pride and passions.

You might think this sounds a bit laughable, but in the lives of the saints we see people doing things which are not humanly possible:  for example;  at what point does Gandalf raise someone from the dead or miraculously cure a terrible disease?  St. John Bosco, St. Francis of Assisi, St. John Vianney - to name but a few - have all done these things.  Their stories are real. Suddenly, telling their stories became more important and exciting than anything I could concuct in my imagination.

Yet more than their miracles (which we cannot imitate), their nobility and self sacrifice for the love of their fellow men is the marvel which shows us the greatness humanity is capable of.  Their examples can, and should, stir us up to live by higher ideals.  Their stories will be remembered eternally, because they were faithful and became what God wanted them to become.
